• U.S. Soccer has announced the schedule for the First Qualifying Round of the 2027 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. A total of 27 matches will take place on September 12-13, 2026, involving 54 amateur clubs from the Open Division. This marks the 112th edition of the U.S. Open Cup, the only national competition in the U.S. where amateur teams can compete against professional clubs. A record 155 amateur teams have entered the Qualifying Rounds, with 16 slots available for the Tournament Proper, which begins in April
• Matchups and byes were determined based on geography and random selection, with 101 clubs receiving a bye to the Second Qualifying Round in October.

Impact & Risks

The competition provides amateur clubs across the U.S. with a rare opportunity to compete against professional teams, fostering grassroots soccer development. However, the high number of entrants and limited slots for the Tournament Proper increase competition, leaving many teams without a chance to advance. Travel logistics and costs could also pose challenges for participating clubs, particularly those with limited resources.
