U.S. Import Volumes Expected to Hit Record High in July Amid Tariff Concerns
US · Published Jul 9, 2026
According to the latest Global Port Tracker report by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates, U.S. import volumes are projected to reach a record high in July
This surge is attributed to shippers accelerating imports ahead of the expiration of the temporary 10% Section 122 tariffs on July 24 and the anticipated introduction of higher tariffs related to forced labor. In May 2026, U.S. ports handled 2.24 million TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units), marking a 10.1% sequential and 14.9% annual increase. The report forecasts 2.47 million TEU for July, which would surpass the previous record set in May

Impact & Risks

The anticipated tariff hikes and record import volumes could have significant implications for retailers, consumers, and the broader economy. Retailers are rushing to stock up on goods ahead of potential price increases, driven by higher tariffs. This could lead to increased costs for consumers, particularly during the back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons. Additionally, the ongoing economic uncertainties, including fluctuating oil prices and geopolitical tensions in the Persian Gulf, may further strain supply chains and impact consumer spending habits. The report also highlights the potential for disruptions in international trade due to these factors.
