The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Weather Service (NWS) Climate Prediction Center (CPC) have reported that El Niño is strengthening, with a greater than 90% chance of becoming a very strong event during fall and winter 2026-
Forecasters estimate a 69% likelihood that this El Niño could reach historic strength, surpassing previous events since

Impact & Risks

The strengthening El Niño could lead to significant weather shifts across the United States. Regions in the Southwest, including California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado, are forecasted to experience above-average snowfall due to an active southern storm track. Conversely, northern states like Washington may see below-average snowfall, with warmer-than-average temperatures limiting snow accumulation. Ski resorts in the West are optimistic about a rebound in snowfall after a disappointing 2025-26 season. However, warmer temperatures associated with strong El Niño events could result in rain at lower elevations, reducing snowpack in some areas. Globally, the Alps and Scandinavia may see above-normal snowfall, while Japan could experience below-normal snowfall and higher temperatures. (Source: Newsweek)
